Q:  I need help! I’m getting married Sept 25.  I tried on my dress yesterday and its a bit tight across the back, I have “back fat”.  If I could just lose 5 pounds, I think that would make a world of difference.  The problem is I already exercise 5 days a week.  I jog for 30 minutes on the treadmill 5 days and add weight training 2 days a week; I cannot seem to lose any weight. I cannot squeeze any more time out of my day to work out.  By the way, I eat pretty healthy too.

A:  In your question you didn’t mention how long you have jogging.  The number 1 reason for reaching a plateau in weight loss is lack of change, doing the same routine month after month.  You need to shock your body, not necessary put more time in, but change your routine.  I recommend High Intensity interval training (HIIT) Here’s an example:

5 minutes @ current speed

1 Min @ increased speed (sprint),

Repeat the above combo for 30 minutes

HIIT is the most efficient way to burn fat. The reason this works is when you do a cardio session at the same pace you body goes into a “steady state”. Almost like being in automatic.  You need to shock your body every few minutes and make it re-adjust to the new workload (1minute sprint).

Other benefits of HIIT are 1) increase your endurance 2) keep your metabolism at a higher level throughout the day 3) less boredom with workout due to constant change.

Don’t forget to change your workout every 5 to 6 weeks.  Good Luck with your new program, I think this will do the trick!
